Schou Education Centre
The Schou Education Centre provides continuing education programs in the Burnaby School District and consists of the Schou Elementary School, which was constructed in 1916. Over the years, its external appearance has been modified with unsympathetic changes and additions. The building previously housed the continuing education program, but since the project's completion, it now serves exclusively as the administrative headquarters for the School District.
Omicron was engaged to rehabilitate the school through a complete heritage revitalization process. We added a new annex to the building and repositioned the project as the new headquarters for the Burnaby School District’s Administrative team. The new annex is a foil to the heritage building, which has a sympathetic building form and character but is still distinctly contemporary in appearance. The two parts of the project are linked by a transparent, glass vestibule creating a clear separation between old and new.
