Omicron and Coast Capital Savings (CCS) teamed up, for the fourth year in a row, to submit another great entry for CANstruction 2009.
Incorporating the theme "Spaceman to Caveman", our team constructed a seven-foot likeness of the beloved cartoon character Porky Pig cast in the role of an intergalactic future hero as "Space Cadet Pig" in the classic cartoon "Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2th Century". Produced at the height of the "space race", the cartoon nostalgically recalls the hope of a benevolent future where hunger is a problem destined to be solved by scientific progress and enlightened political leadership.
With only 24 hours to construct the structure, Omicron and CCS assembled a team of 25 volunteers for the build. There were a few tense moments during the build including a near collapse but with the sound advice of structural engineers and some well placed plywood, we managed to pull through. In total, our structure alone will provide over 3,750 cans to the Food Bank!
CANstruction is an annual international design/build competition benefitting the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society and brings together teams of architects, engineers, graphic artists and students to build sculptures using only canned food and other non-perishables. The results are displayed to the public as magnificent sculpture exhibits and at the close of the exhibition, all of the canned food used in the structures is donated to local food banks.
With over 28 entries providing 150,000 food items during CANstruction's 7th year in Vancouver, this event makes a considerable impact on the Food Bank's ability to provide nourishment to those in need in our community.
